Broiler Welfare Outcome Measures: From Gait to Foot Pad Health

Welfare outcome measures in broiler production assess the actual welfare experienced by birds rather than the inputs provided. Gait scoring, foot pad dermatitis scoring and mortality rates are key tools.

Welfare Considerations

Outcome-based welfare assessment represents a shift from checking that inputs are in place (do they have perches? straw? adequate space?) to measuring actual welfare (what is the gait score? what proportion have foot pad dermatitis? how active are the birds?). This shift matters because good inputs don't always produce good outcomes - a farm with adequate stocking density but poor ventilation may still have high foot pad dermatitis rates; a farm with below-optimal stocking density but excellent management may achieve better outcomes. Outcome measures hold producers accountable for results rather than merely for having the right paperwork.
