Dog Canine Cognitive Dysfunction and Night Anxiety

Night-time anxiety and sleep disruption are hallmark signs of canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome. Evidence-based management significantly improves sleep quality for both dogs and their owners.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Night-time CDS manifestations create welfare problems for both dog and owner. A dog that wanders, vocalises and cannot settle through the night is experiencing significant distress - confusion, anxiety and the physiological discomfort of disrupted circadian rhythm. Owners who are repeatedly woken lose the patience and energy needed to provide daytime care. Effective management requires treating all contributing factors: pain assessment and treatment, melatonin supplementation for sleep support, selegiline for CDS if appropriate, environmental management (nightlights, familiar bedding, access to water and toileting) and consistent bedtime routine. Quality of nighttime rest is a legitimate welfare outcome measure.
