Wild animal use in circuses has been extensively restricted or banned across the developed world following sustained welfare campaigns. UK, EU and global progress charts the decline of circus animal welfare compromises.
Circus animal welfare problems are structural, not addressable through husbandry improvements within the circus model. Wild animals that spend the vast majority of their lives in transport trailers, temporary caging and performance rings cannot have their species-appropriate welfare needs met regardless of how well-intentioned the trainers or how nutritious the food. The welfare case for banning wild animals in circuses is clear and was accepted by the UK Parliament after years of evidence review. The remaining challenge is global - countries without bans continue to operate circus animal shows, and animals are traded internationally for circus use.
