Water is the most critical nutrient for farm animal welfare. Inadequate water provision in quantity, quality or accessibility causes rapid welfare deterioration and is a welfare offence under UK law.
Water welfare failures are both legally prohibited and rapidly welfare-damaging. A dairy cow deprived of water for 24 hours in heat stress conditions shows significant physiological deterioration; pigs without water develop gastric ulcers and welfare compromises within hours; poultry without water show rapid mortality in warm conditions. Despite clear legal requirements and welfare urgency, water deprivation through equipment failure is a more common welfare problem than is often acknowledged. Regular equipment maintenance, multiple water source points to prevent competition-driven exclusion, and winter frost protection are welfare essentials that require proactive management.
