Veganism - eliminating all animal products from diet and lifestyle - is the most comprehensive individual response to animal welfare concerns about food. Honest welfare analysis examines both its impact and its limitations.
Veganism represents the most significant individual welfare action most people in developed countries can take - eliminating participation in systems that cause suffering to tens or hundreds of animals per year. The welfare case is robust: farm animals experience welfare harms from confinement, painful procedures, transport and slaughter that are directly funded by consumer purchases of animal products. The limitations are real but do not undermine the welfare case: plant farming does cause some animal deaths, but estimates consistently show that veganism causes far fewer animal deaths than omnivorous diets. Beyond diet, welfare impact is amplified by advocacy, corporate engagement and political action - individual veganism combined with effective advocacy is more welfare-positive than either alone.
