Zoo accreditation provides a baseline welfare framework, but comprehensive welfare auditing requires individual animal assessment going beyond facility standards to evaluate actual welfare outcomes.
Zoo accreditation standards are welfare inputs - they specify what facilities, resources and policies a zoo must have. They are necessary but insufficient to ensure good welfare outcomes. A zoo can meet accreditation standards while still having individual animals experiencing poor welfare because of incompatible social groupings, insufficient enrichment novelty, inappropriate temperature, or medical conditions causing chronic pain. True welfare auditing requires individual animal outcome assessment - measuring what each animal actually experiences through validated behavioural indicators. Leading zoos are moving toward this more demanding but more meaningful welfare assessment approach, generating data that allows genuine welfare improvement over time.
