Phasing out farrowing crates to allow sows freedom of movement during birth and nursing is one of the most significant pig welfare improvements.
Farrowing crates cause significant welfare compromise through restriction of highly motivated natural behaviours. Sows are strongly motivated to nest-build before birth and preventing this causes frustration and stress. Free farrowing allows expression of maternal behaviours, reduces chronic stress, and improves sow body condition. Piglet safety can be maintained through careful pen design including creep areas and appropriate temperature management.
