Farm Animal Welfare

Farmed Deer Welfare in Commercial Venison Production

Farmed deer are prey species maintaining strong flight responses that make intensive management inherently challenging for welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed deer welfare presents unique challenges because these animals have not undergone the domestication process that makes cattle and sheep more manageable in farm settings. Their flight response to perceived threats remains strong and can cause fatal capture myopathy from the physiological consequences of extreme fear and exertion. Welfare-focused deer farming uses appropriate low-disturbance stockmanship, corral systems designed for calm handling, and on-farm slaughter to avoid transport. The naturalness of the extensive grazing system does not itself ensure good welfare if handling and slaughter are not managed appropriately.
