Wild Deer Management Ethics and Welfare

Wild deer populations require management in the UK due to absence of natural predators, but management methods raise significant welfare questions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Wild deer management involves difficult welfare calculations. Unmanaged populations cause habitat damage affecting biodiversity that in turn affects other wildlife welfare. Individual management events - stalking and culling - when performed by skilled practitioners cause rapid death with minimal suffering. However the welfare of shot-and-lost deer who die slowly from wounds, injured deer from vehicle collisions who may not be found quickly, and winter starvation in overabundant populations are significant concerns. Investment in stalker training, prompt response to road casualties and population modelling to prevent overshoot and starvation are welfare priorities.
