Zoo Animal Welfare

Zoo Parrot Flock Welfare Management

Parrots in zoo collections require social management that recognises their complex flock-based social systems and high cognitive and sensory stimulation needs.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Zoo parrot welfare requires understanding the intensity and complexity of the social, cognitive and physical needs of these animals. Parrots in small cages with limited enrichment and social contact develop feather-destructive behaviour at high rates - a reliable indicator of poor psychological welfare. Species-appropriate flock sizes, pair or group housing, extensive foraging enrichment and cognitive challenge are non-negotiable welfare requirements rather than enhancements. Some zoo collections have achieved excellent parrot welfare through large aviaries and natural behaviour encouragement, providing models for the sector.
