Progressive feedlot operators are adopting welfare improvements that address the most significant welfare problems in intensive cattle finishing systems.
Feedlot welfare improvement is occurring in the most progressive operations as the business case for welfare becomes clearer - reduced mortality, improved feed conversion and better carcass quality in higher welfare systems. However the baseline of conventional feedlot welfare remains low, and improvement within intensive finishing systems has limits. The fundamental welfare challenges of space restriction, monotonous environment and high-concentrate diet cannot be fully resolved while the intensive feedlot model is maintained. Welfare certification for feedlot beef can verify improvements relative to conventional practice while consumer demand for extensively raised alternatives drives market change.
