Beef Cattle Extensive Grass-Fed Welfare Considerations

Extensively reared grass-fed beef cattle have different welfare profiles from intensively farmed counterparts, with some advantages and some unique welfare challenges.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Extensive grass-fed beef systems provide genuine welfare advantages through space, natural behaviour expression and lower levels of production-related disease. However extensive does not automatically mean high welfare. Nutritional deficiencies from marginal grazing land, inadequate handling facilities making veterinary procedures more stressful, limited inspection frequency, and poor biosecurity are welfare challenges specific to extensive systems. Welfare-focused extensive cattle production addresses these challenges while maintaining the genuine advantages of space and pasture access that make extensively reared beef a higher welfare choice than feedlot alternatives.
