Exotic Pet Welfare and Trade Regulation

The exotic pet trade brings wild or captive-bred animals into homes unequipped for their welfare needs, causing significant suffering to millions of animals globally.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Exotic pet welfare is compromised at multiple levels - in wild capture, during transport, and in captive keeping conditions that rarely meet the complex needs of wild-adapted species. Even captive-bred individuals have the same physiological and behavioural needs as their wild counterparts. The assumption that animals available in pet shops are legal, healthy and suitable for captive keeping is often incorrect. Welfare education for prospective exotic pet owners must be comprehensive and honest about the requirements and challenges of keeping species outside their evolutionary context. The most welfare-positive choice for most exotic species is not to keep them as pets.
