Corncrake Conservation - Management Advances

Advanced habitat management techniques for corncrake recovery in UK and Ireland, including mowing protocols and habitat creation.

Key Facts

UK corncrake population fell from 5,000 pairs in 1970 to around 900 pairs currently, primarily in western Scotland and Ireland
Corncrake are ground-nesting birds highly vulnerable to mowing machinery during the breeding season
Corncrake-friendly mowing using flush bars and dawn-to-dusk mowing avoidance reduces mortality significantly
RSPB and Crofting Commission partnerships have stabilised populations in the Hebrides
Iris beds and tall marginal vegetation provide essential refuge for adult birds and chicks during mowing

Welfare Considerations

Corncrake welfare during the agricultural season is critically dependent on farmer behaviour and machinery practices. Birds and chicks killed by mowing experience acute trauma. Population-level consequences of individual welfare failures accumulate into extinction risk. This makes corncrake conservation an example where individual animal welfare and species conservation are inseparably linked.

What You Can Do

Join RSPB's Corncrake Calling project if farming in western Scotland or Ireland
Adopt corncrake-friendly mowing practices: fit flush bars, mow from centre outward, avoid night mowing
Create and maintain iris or nettle beds as corncrake refuge habitat
Record corncrake calling locations and submit to BirdTrack or RSPB
Apply for agri-environment options specifically targeting corncrake habitat management
