Farmed Salmon Pre-Harvest Crowding - Welfare

Welfare impacts of pre-harvest crowding and confinement in Atlantic salmon, and improvements in handling protocols.

Key Facts

Pre-harvest crowding concentrates salmon into shrinking pen volumes causing density stress
Crowding increases cortisol to peak levels within minutes and sustains elevation for hours
Food withdrawal before crowding is standard practice but does not eliminate welfare impacts
Welfare-conscious pre-harvest protocols minimise crowding duration and monitor for mortality events
Transition to in-water slaughter systems reduces the handling stress of onshore transport

Welfare Considerations

This topic has significant welfare implications for the animals involved. Evidence-based management approaches and appropriate veterinary care can substantially improve outcomes.
