Sweet itch (insect bite hypersensitivity) is an allergic skin condition affecting horses, causing severe itching, self-trauma and chronic skin changes that significantly impact welfare and quality of life.
Sweet itch significantly reduces quality of life - severely affected horses may be in near-constant distress during midge season, unable to rest properly or engage in normal grazing and social behaviour. Welfare management requires a combination of physical barriers (sweet itch rugs, fly mesh), environmental management (stable during peak midge activity, fans, move away from standing water), and medical treatment where necessary (antihistamines, steroids, novel therapies). Owners must balance protection from midges with the horse's ability to move freely and maintain normal behaviour. The most severely affected horses may require rehoming to lower-midge environments.
