Aquatic turtles are popular but frequently neglected pets whose complex environmental and dietary needs are poorly met in typical home conditions, causing chronic welfare problems.
Aquatic turtle welfare failures are widespread and chronic. Under-sized tanks, inadequate filtration (leading to bacterial infections), poor lighting, inappropriate diet and inadequate temperature management are common in homes. Animals experience shell and skin infections, metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections and psychological stress from inability to regulate temperature or express normal behaviour. The root problem is misrepresentation at point of sale - turtles are often sold as low-maintenance pets when they require sophisticated and expensive setups. Regulatory restrictions on sales of small turtles (e.g. the US ban on turtles under 4 inches) have had partial success but are imperfectly enforced.
