Feather destructive behaviour in parrots and other companion birds is a welfare indicator of significant psychological distress, with multiple potential causes requiring systematic diagnosis.
Feather destructive behaviour is almost always a welfare signal - an indication that something is wrong for this individual bird, whether medically or psychologically. Treating the behaviour without addressing the cause is ineffective. Diagnosis requires systematic investigation: full health workup to exclude medical causes, detailed history of social environment, diet, routine and previous stress events, and behavioural assessment by someone experienced with parrot behaviour. Treatment for psychological FDB typically requires significant husbandry change - more social interaction, structured foraging opportunities, enriched environment, sometimes companion birds - rather than just collar fitting or medication. FDB that is allowed to continue causes physical damage and indicates ongoing psychological suffering.
