Commercial octopus farming is advancing rapidly in Spain and elsewhere, raising urgent welfare concerns given octopus cognitive complexity and the challenges of meeting their needs in captivity.
Octopus farming welfare concerns are fundamental rather than manageable - this is a highly intelligent, solitary, territorial species that expresses profound individual personality. The normal conditions of commercial aquaculture (high density, controlled environment, industrialised slaughter) are incompatible with the known behavioural and psychological needs of octopuses. The absence of a humane slaughter method means that scale farming of octopuses would cause enormous suffering at slaughter alone, before considering welfare during growout. The scientific consensus supporting octopus sentience is strong - the UK recognised this in the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022, and specifically banned farming as a consequence. Other jurisdictions should follow this evidence-based lead.
