Ducks are farmed in large numbers globally but face severe welfare restrictions from water access deprivation and confinement that prevents their most fundamental natural behaviours.
Duck water access is not a welfare luxury but a physiological necessity - ducks without sufficient clean water for head submersion develop eye infections, blocked nares and nasal passages, and cannot perform essential preening behaviours that maintain feather waterproofing and insulation. The frustration of highly motivated water-bathing behaviour causes chronic negative affect. This is a case where the economically preferred solution (minimal water provision for efficiency) is directly contrary to the species' welfare needs. RSPCA Assured and Freedom Food standards address this, but the majority of farmed ducks globally receive inadequate water access. Consumer preference for welfare-certified duck products creates market incentives for improvement.
