Radioactive iodine (I-131) treatment for feline hyperthyroidism is the most effective and welfare-positive treatment but remains inaccessible to many cat owners due to cost and availability.
Radioactive iodine welfare equity is a real issue - the most welfare-positive, curative treatment for a common disease in older cats is unavailable to many owners due to cost and geography. Cats managed on daily medication face the welfare costs of twice-daily pilling (stressful for many cats), potential medication side effects and the risks of inadequate owner compliance. Dietary management (prescription iodine-restricted diet) requires lifelong adherence and treats symptomatically rather than addressing the disease. I-131 eliminates the ongoing welfare costs of these management challenges with a single treatment. Expanding treatment availability, reducing facility licensing barriers and including I-131 in standard pet insurance coverage would significantly improve access to this welfare-positive option.
