Assessing the welfare needs of crayfish in farming systems and home aquariums, informed by emerging evidence of their capacity to suffer.
Crayfish occupy an uncertain position in animal welfare frameworks, but accumulating evidence suggests they have the capacity for nociception and potentially for pain experience. Their nervous system, while very different from vertebrates, supports learning from aversive events and shows states analogous to anxiety. Aquaculture conditions often involve extreme crowding, limb loss from cannibalism, and stressful handling. As pets, they frequently receive inadequate care. Applying the precautionary principle means taking crayfish welfare seriously while research continues, particularly regarding slaughter methods and housing standards.
