Examining the welfare challenges that occur when farm animals are sold through auction systems and how standards can be improved.
Livestock auction markets present significant welfare challenges as animals are moved from familiar farm environments into novel, busy, and often stressful settings. Mixing of animals from different farms can lead to aggression, disease transmission, and social disruption. Handling by unfamiliar people with varying stockmanship skills creates additional stress. While markets serve important economic functions for the livestock industry, their welfare implications deserve serious attention. Improvements to market design, handling facilities, mandatory CCTV, and stockmanship training can substantially reduce unnecessary suffering during these commercially necessary transitions.
