Evidence-based approaches to reducing stress, injury, and suffering during the transportation of farm animals to slaughter facilities.
The journey to slaughter is often the most stressful experience in a farm animal's life, combining multiple acute stressors simultaneously. Animals that have spent their entire lives in one location are suddenly loaded onto unfamiliar vehicles, mixed with strange animals, exposed to variable temperatures and motion, and transported for hours or days. This final period of suffering is unnecessary in many cases - animals raised for food will be killed regardless, and the manner of their final hours matters enormously for their welfare. Reducing journey times, improving transport conditions, and expanding on-farm slaughter options are meaningful welfare priorities.
