The welfare benefit of detecting lameness 2-4 days earlier translates directly into shorter duration of pain and faster return to mobility. Mastitis detected through rumination changes allows treatment before severe clinical disease develops. Automated daily body condition scoring catches nutritional decline before welfare-compromising weight loss occurs. However, the welfare benefit of PLF technology depends on farmer responsiveness to alerts: monitoring without responsive management cannot improve welfare. The technology also creates risk of false reassurance if positive monitoring indicators are taken as welfare proof without complementary observational stockmanship.
