Farmed Salmon Pre-Slaughter Crowding Welfare: Minimizing Final Stress

Examining the welfare impacts of crowding salmon before slaughter and best practices for minimizing suffering during this critical period.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The pre-slaughter period is among the most welfare-compromising phases of farmed salmon production. Crowding fish to high densities causes acute stress, physical injury from conspecific contact and handling equipment, and potential oxygen depletion in crowded water. Fish that are severely stressed at slaughter also suffer more during the stunning process if that process is not optimally calibrated. Minimizing crowding duration, optimizing water flow and oxygen supplementation, using well-designed pumping systems that minimize physical damage, and ensuring rapid, effective stunning are all critical welfare interventions for this phase of production.
