Wildlife Welfare

Wildlife Crime Trafficking Advanced

Wildlife trafficking causes immense individual suffering to millions of wild animals annually, with conditions during capture, transport, and trade representing some of the worst animal welfare situations.

Key Facts

Wildlife trafficking is the fourth largest illegal trade globally after drugs, arms, and humans
Mortality rates during capture and transport can exceed 80% for some species
Live animals in the trade endure severe crowding, dehydration, and stress
Wildlife markets create disease spillover risks including pandemic potential
CITES regulates international trade but enforcement remains a major challenge

Welfare Considerations

Wildlife trafficking inflicts severe suffering on individual animals from the moment of capture through transport and trade. Beyond species conservation concerns, the welfare of individual animals in the trade deserves recognition as a major ethical issue requiring urgent action.
