Farmed shrimp welfare is in an early stage of development compared to finfish welfare, with key practices including eyestalk ablation and high-density stocking causing welfare concern. Eyestalk ablation removes sensory tissue from living animals without anaesthetic to trigger spawning, causing injury and pain based on the nociceptive capacity of decapods. Alternative spawning induction methods that do not require ablation exist and are used by some producers. High stocking densities cause competition, reduced oxygen availability, and chronic stress. The recognition of decapod sentience in UK legislation provides a regulatory model for extending welfare protection to farmed shrimp in other jurisdictions. Consumer and certification pressure is the primary driver of welfare improvement given the international distribution of shrimp production.
