Zoo Mandrill Social Welfare

Mandrills are the world's largest monkeys with complex social structures and striking sexual dimorphism, requiring careful social group management for welfare in captivity.

Key Facts

Wild mandrills live in large aggregations called hordes of up to 800 individuals
Dominant males have brightly coloured faces whose intensity correlates with social status
Social aggression in small captive groups can be severe without adequate space and complexity
Female choice and male social rank affect reproductive success and group dynamics
Enrichment that allows foraging over large areas reduces aggression in captive groups

Welfare Considerations

Mandrill welfare in captivity is challenged by the impossibility of replicating the vast social groups and foraging ranges of wild populations. Managing social complexity, providing environmental enrichment, and monitoring individual welfare outcomes is essential for this highly social and intelligent primate.
