Welfare challenges in Mediterranean bluefin tuna ranching operations including crowding, transport, and slaughter practice review.
Bluefin tuna are large, migratory fish that travel thousands of kilometres in the wild. Ranching operations confine these animals in sea cages for months before slaughter, creating conditions incompatible with their natural behavioural needs. The welfare implications of capture, transport, crowding, and slaughter deserve much greater attention given the scale of the industry.
