Organic poultry certification promises higher welfare but standards vary significantly between certifying bodies. Understanding what organic certification actually guarantees for poultry welfare helps consumers make informed decisions.
Organic poultry welfare delivers genuine improvements over conventional production in important areas but with significant variation between certifying bodies and individual farms. The use of slower-growing breeds is perhaps the most impactful welfare improvement, reducing the lameness, cardiovascular disease, and skeletal problems endemic in fast-growing commercial breeds. Meaningful outdoor access with quality vegetation and shade provides natural behaviour opportunities that enhance positive welfare. However, organic certification alone does not guarantee consistently high welfare: large flock sizes can limit the portion of birds actually accessing outdoor range, outdoor areas without shade or shelter may be avoided, and certifying body standards differ significantly in their rigour. Comparing specific certification standards rather than assuming all organic is equivalent improves consumer welfare decision-making.
