Review of emerging scientific evidence on welfare in aquatic invertebrates including crabs, lobsters, shrimp, and cephalopods.
Evidence for sentience in aquatic invertebrates has advanced significantly in recent years, shifting the scientific consensus toward precautionary welfare protection. Crabs, lobsters, and cephalopods show behavioural and physiological responses to potentially harmful stimuli that meet criteria for nociception and, in some species, conscious pain experience. Commercial practice has not yet caught up with this science.
