The scale of wild animal suffering in nature and why this matters for animal welfare ethics and effective prioritisation.
The recognition that wild animal suffering occurs at enormous scale challenges anthropocentric and naturalised views of wildlife welfare. If welfare matters morally, the suffering of wild animals from parasitism, starvation, and predation constitutes an enormous and largely unaddressed problem. Awareness of this scale encourages both epistemic humility and priority-setting attention toward highest-impact interventions.
