Welfare science uses experimental methods that must themselves be welfare-positive. The ethics of conducting research on animal welfare requires careful attention to the welfare costs of the research process itself.
Animal welfare research ethics requires confronting the paradox that research intended to improve welfare imposes welfare costs on animals used in research. Experimental paradigms that expose animals to controlled fear, pain, or deprivation to measure responses cause genuine suffering to research animals, justified only by the benefits to future animals from resulting knowledge. The obligation to minimise this cost through the 3Rs is as strong in welfare research as in other animal research. Non-invasive methods including remote behaviour monitoring, faecal hormone sampling, and observational studies in commercial settings reduce research welfare costs while often improving ecological validity by studying animals in their actual production environments. The welfare research community has a particular ethical responsibility to demonstrate that its methods meet the highest welfare standards.
