Welfare review of velvet antler removal in farmed deer, including pain management, legislation, and alternatives to the practice.
Velvet antler removal is a welfare-significant procedure that removes richly innervated tissue from farmed deer. The pain of removal without adequate analgesia is well-documented and preventable. Mandatory anaesthesia and analgesia protocols, coupled with reduced market demand for velvet products, would substantially reduce this welfare burden.
