Managing the welfare of dogs with epilepsy including medication, seizure monitoring, and quality of life assessment.
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition that profoundly affects the welfare of dogs and their owners. Seizures themselves cause distress, and the post-ictal period of disorientation and altered behaviour adds to welfare burden. With appropriate management - including optimised medication, monitoring, and quality of life assessment - many epileptic dogs can maintain good welfare, but severe refractory epilepsy presents ongoing challenges.
