Zoo Sun Bear Enrichment Advanced

Advanced enrichment strategies for zoo sun bears that address this species' specific cognitive needs and prevent stereotypic behaviour.

Key Facts

Sun bears are highly solitary and territorial in the wild with large home ranges
Captive sun bears commonly develop stereotypic behaviours including repetitive pacing
Cognitive enrichment including puzzle feeders significantly reduces stereotypy
Honey-based enrichment engages sun bears' natural foraging behaviour effectively
Sun Bears are among the least well-studied bear species requiring more welfare research

Welfare Considerations

Sun bear welfare in captivity requires enrichment that addresses the species' high cognitive complexity and natural foraging demands. Wild sun bears spend much of their time searching for and processing food - a behaviour that captivity suppresses unless active enrichment is provided. Advanced enrichment programmes that engage natural foraging and cognitive abilities are essential for preventing the stereotypic behaviour common in inadequately enriched captive sun bears.
