Evidence review of whether zoo conservation education programmes achieve genuine behavioural change in visitors, and how to maximise educational impact.
Zoo conservation education is a frequently cited justification for keeping wild animals in captivity. The evidence for genuine behaviour change is mixed, and the welfare cost of captivity to individual animals deserves explicit consideration in this justification. When education is effective - converting visitor interest into conservation action - it provides a stronger ethical basis for zoo conservation claims.
