The science of stereotypic behaviour prevention in horses, including crib-biting, weaving, and box-walking, and management approaches.
Stereotypic behaviours in horses are persistent indicators of welfare problems, arising when horses are managed in ways that prevent expression of natural behaviours. The most effective intervention is prevention through appropriate early management including social contact, turnout, and forage access. Attempts to suppress established stereotypies without addressing their causes fail to improve welfare and may worsen frustration.
