Welfare requirements for flamingos in zoo settings including flock size, appropriate habitat, and breeding management.
Flamingo welfare in zoo settings depends critically on social group size. The species is so highly colonial that small groups show reduced breeding success and abnormal social behaviour. Providing large flocks, appropriate water and substrate for natural filter feeding, and low-disturbance environments allows flamingos to express natural social behaviours and maintain good welfare.
