Zoo Fishing Cat Welfare

Welfare requirements for fishing cats in zoo settings, including water access, hunting enrichment, and the species' specialist ecological needs.

Key Facts

Fishing cats are semi-aquatic wild cats from South and Southeast Asia
The species is vulnerable to extinction due to wetland habitat loss
Fishing cats require access to water pools for natural foraging behaviour
Zoo fishing cat populations are important for conservation breeding
Enrichment that engages natural fishing behaviour is critical for welfare

Welfare Considerations

Fishing cat welfare in zoo settings requires providing appropriate water access as the species' ecology revolves around aquatic environments. Enrichment that engages natural hunting behaviour - including live fish feeding opportunities - supports species-typical welfare. Zoo fishing cat populations contribute to conservation breeding for a species increasingly threatened by wetland loss.
