Environmental enrichment for laboratory mice significantly improves welfare outcomes and, evidence increasingly shows, also improves the reliability and translatability of research results.
Laboratory mice are among the most numerous animals used in research, and their welfare has historically received insufficient attention. Evidence that enrichment both improves welfare and enhances research reproducibility provides a powerful argument that can overcome institutional inertia. Better welfare is better science in the animal research context.
