Goat Welfare in Dairy Systems Evidence

Dairy goat welfare is shaped by housing conditions, kid management, health challenges, and the specific behavioural needs of this highly intelligent and social species.

Key Facts

Global dairy goat numbers have grown significantly as demand for goat milk products increases
Goats are highly motivated to climb, explore, and maintain sight lines in their social group
Indoor housing systems often fail to provide adequate vertical space and complexity for goats
Kid separation shortly after birth causes distress to both does and kids
Caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE) virus affects a significant proportion of dairy goat herds
Lameness, mastitis, and internal parasites are major welfare concerns in dairy goat production
Welfare standards specifically addressing dairy goats are less developed than those for dairy cattle

Welfare Considerations

Dairy goats are intelligent, curious, and social animals with specific welfare needs that conventional dairy housing often fails to meet. The rapid growth of the goat dairy sector means that welfare standards need urgent development and enforcement before poor practices become entrenched at scale.
