Artificial intelligence and machine learning are creating new possibilities for automated welfare monitoring, early disease detection, and precision management of farm and companion animals.
AI technology offers transformative potential for animal welfare monitoring at scales impossible for human observers. Early disease detection, pain recognition, and behavioural assessment could become automated and continuous. However, technology is a tool that amplifies the quality of the underlying welfare system - AI monitoring in a poor welfare environment reveals problems but does not fix them. Investment in both technology and genuine welfare improvements is needed.
