Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) offer significant environmental advantages but create unique welfare challenges that require active management.
RAS technology offers a pathway to more sustainable aquaculture but must not come at the cost of fish welfare. The enclosed, controlled environment of RAS provides opportunities to optimise welfare that open-cage systems cannot offer - but realising those opportunities requires active investment in fish welfare science and system design rather than simply assuming technological superiority.
