Chimpanzees are highly social, politically complex primates whose welfare in captivity depends fundamentally on the quality of their social environment and opportunities for natural behaviour.
Chimpanzees are among the most cognitively complex animals in captivity, with social, intellectual, and emotional needs that make truly adequate captive welfare extremely challenging to provide. Their welfare depends critically on appropriate social groups, cognitive stimulation, choice and agency, and skilled keeper relationships. Facilities that cannot meet these standards should not keep chimpanzees.
