Routine sheep husbandry procedures including castration, tail docking, and mulesing cause significant pain that can and should be managed with appropriate analgesia.
Routine pain management for routine procedures is one of the most achievable welfare improvements in sheep farming. The knowledge exists, the drugs are available and inexpensive, and the welfare benefit is clear. The barrier is primarily awareness and attitude. Every sheep experiencing a painful procedure without analgesia is a preventable welfare harm.
