Traditional animal circus acts are being banned or heavily regulated globally as evidence mounts that training conditions, transport, and performance environments compromise welfare.
Circus animals endure constant transport, confinement in small temporary enclosures, forced proximity to loud crowds, and — in many historical cases — training through pain and fear. Even where physical abuse has been eliminated, the environment of circus performance remains fundamentally incompatible with the behavioral needs of large, complex wild animals.
