Rabbits in conventional cages cannot perform any of their species-typical behaviors — burrowing, running, jumping, or socializing in natural groupings. Welfare indicators including bone fractures from osteoporosis, stereotypic behaviors, and high mortality rates reflect profound behavioral need frustration. The rabbit farming sector has received far less welfare attention than poultry or pigs despite equivalent suffering.
