Multicat households present significant welfare challenges through resource competition and social tension. Advanced resource management can substantially reduce chronic stress in cats.
Chronic social stress in multicat households is a significant and underrecognised welfare problem. Many cats live in a state of permanent low-level tension that owners may not recognise as a welfare issue. Signs include avoidance, over-grooming, urine marking and loss of appetite. Systematic resource management, environmental enrichment and in some cases rehoming are the welfare solutions. Early recognition and intervention before stress becomes chronic is critical.
